The British Government saw the USA as a fast-growing economic rival, and were not displeased to see it split into two. They were intending to grant official recognition to the Confederates if Lee's plan to invade Pennsylvania proved successful.

Some of the older conservatives, and the upper class generally, still felt that the American revolution had been a bit of cheek, so they also were ready to support the Confederacy, which seemed to have aspects of a feudal aristocracy.

The cotton workers in Lancashire were strongly anti-slavery, and were willing to sacrifice jobs rather than support the Confederates.
