Sherman marched through the south bringing total war. He burned everything and the city of Atlanta. After the war he was assigned the task of doing total war on the plains by killing as many buffalo he could. He took to his task with relish and did kill the majority of the herds of buffalo and this wiped out the major supply of food the the plains tribes.
...the Confederacy was unable to defend itself, and that Union victory was inevitable.
US Major General William T. Sherman's march to the sea covered most of the land southwest of Atlanta Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean port city of Savannah. He also marched and assaulted much of South Carolina.

Atlanta. This was not meant to be his objective. Grant had simply told him to destroy the Army of Tennessee, but he had not managed to achieve this. Meanwhile it was election year, and Lincoln needed some victories in a hurry. So Sherman took Atlanta, and the North felt a bit less war-weary.
US General Grant forced the Shenandoah Valley campaign. Grant placed Major General Siegel in charge of the advance on the Shenandoah Valley campaign. Grant had no true confidence in Siegel and finally General Sheridan replaced Siegel and marched on the Valley.

Sherman cut his troops off from their supply lines in Atlanta and marched to Savanna by living off the land: taking the crops which were ripe in the fields, and confiscating livestock on the hoof; as well as destroying railroad and telegraph lines , mills and anything of industrial value along the way. It was the first deployment of Total War since the days of the Mongols.
Confederate Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson led the Jackson's Valley Campaign through the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia in the spring of 1862. Jackson marched 17,000 men 646 miles in 48 days.

General William T. Sherman marched from the innermost area of Georgia to the coast, or the sea. He and his army formed a miles- long line, burning and destroying most of Georgia. This scared the South, and helped with the Union victory of the US Civil War.
