General Butler
Freed slaves followed the Union armies because they had nothing else to do, and ended up working for them, some of them in uniform.
No, the confederate had no slaves, but the union did have African American solders.
The Union is a group of states that disagree with slaves and the Confederate is a group of states that believe in slaves.
Wherever the Union armies went in the South (after the Emancipation Proclamation), they were under orders to liberate any slaves they found. These (ex) slaves followed the armies back North and were given menial jobs in the camps. Presently some were allowed in uniform. Although the "liberators" did free many slaves on their march, it would be a disservice not to mention both sides of this. Some slaves were murdered by the Federal troops, and many of the women were raped by their liberators. Many followed the Union troops, and fell ill or starved. Often, slaves would flee into the woods when the Yankee armies approached, knowing that in some cases the men would be taken to perform menial tasks, such as grave and trench digging.

They didn't use slaves. In fact, they freed slaves they found in confederate areas. These slaves followed the Union forces to stay safe.
Slaves were steadily liberated by the Union armies as they campaigned in the South. They followed these armies to the Northern camps, where they were employed as labourers, and a few joined black regiments from the North.
The Union armies were against slavery, as one of their key points to fight about, and freed slaves often would join in. Slaves could also usually remain free in the North (thus, the Union Army) and many other slaves wished to be free. If the Union were to win the Civil War, then it was highly likely that slaver would be abolished so many salevs chose to help fight in side with the Union for that reasons.
So the slaves were free from Ab Lincon
