One of the most famous cases was the story of the Little Rock Nine, which took place in Little Rock, Arkansas. Governor Orval Faubus had the National Guard block nine black students from entering Central High in Little Rock because he didn't want to integrate Little Rock's schools. President Eisenhower heard of this and sent Federal Troops to protect the nine black students.

The whites fought hard to keep the blacks out and today the school is 60% black.

In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court decided in the famous case, Brown v. Board of Education, that segregation in schools (separating black and white students) was unconstitutional. To comply with the court's ruling, the Little Rock School Board planned to integrate Little Rock schools starting in 1957. Nine black students were registered at the all-white Central High School. On the first day of school as they attempted to enter, many segregationist groups blocked their entrance. Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus sent in National Guard troops to support the segregationists and block the students from entering. The city was divided for weeks over the issue and it made national headlines. Eventually the Little Rock mayor asked President Eisenhower to deploy federal troops. The troops walked the Little Rock Nine into the school on September 25, 1957. Although they attended the previously all-white school they were still subject to taunting and violence. The Little Rock Nine are symbolic of the Civil Rights Movement and Central High School has since been named a historic site.
