In English it is a cradleboard. These were made in specific tribal shapes and could be hung from the front of a woman's saddle when moving camp.

Tell anyone who thinks that the word papoose means a cradleboard that they are completely wrong - it comes from an east coast Algonquian word for "child" (Natick papoos = he is very small).
