The Imperialism forces of Europe, the USA and of Japan were all involved in gaining territory and spheres of influence, especially in China. The 1904-5 Russo-Japanese War was evidence of Japan's surprising power.As for the US, yes it had emerged as a Pacific power, with navy and holdings in the Philippines and Hawaii. But the US then was primarily concerned with keeping order in its own sphere in South America and Cuba.
