During the American Civil War, the North enjoyed numerous advantages over the South from the start of the conflict onward. One particularly significant advantage that it did not have, however, was the luxury of remaining on the defense. In order to achieve its war-aims, the North would need to take the offensive and invade Southern territory.
One of several advantages that the Confederacy held over the Union was that there was a tradition of militarism that was the result of Southerners attending military academies or even West Point, that was lacking in the North. Very often upper class Southerners would have a military oriented education and then passed over military service to return to their plantations, or other businesses.
Another strength the South had, at least initially, was their idea that they were fighting for a "cause". The cause was independence. In order to survive the huge armies and advantages of the Union required more "patriotism" if you will than did soldiers of the Union. There was little cause for many, not all, that they were not in danger of a Southern invasion.
Certainly US States such as those in New York and the New England States had no concerns that their homes, farms, and businesses would be destroyed by Southern forces.
Confederate advantages:
Some of the best officers of the US Army had resigned to join the Confederates.
Traditional advantage in cavalry - most young Southerners could ride and shoot
Officer class - the army was a more natural choice of career for sons of rural landowners than in the industrial North.
Rank-&-file - a more soldierlike breed, a generally aggressive kind of people
Home-ground advantage - most battles were on terrain unfamiliar to the enemy
Stronger war-mission - to defend the homeland against the invader.
Their President did not have to face an election in mid-war, as Lincoln did.
(At the beginning) Prospect of recognition and military aid from Britain and France.
In the south, African Americans were not treated as equals and therefore would not fight for the confederate army. However, some African Americans fought for the North.
An advantage the North did not have is a "home-court advantage" which would allow for shorter supply and troop lines.
in the civil the south had better generals and knew the land better
At the beginning of the war the South had better generals than the North had.

The North's biggest advantage was its industrial might. The rural and agricultural South couldn't keep up.
The US had been split into the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South)
In the US Civil War, the North had the advantage in population and industry. The South had the advantage of better officers, and that they were defending their homes.
In the US Civil War, the South had a number of advantages. Perhaps one of the best ones was the fact that they did not have to conquer the North to win. Their goal for independence would come when the North no longer wished to continue the conflict.
North. South was mainly agricultural.

The North had two disadvantages. As the invading army, they lacked detailed knowledge of the local terrain, and most of the experienced professional officers were Southern, meaning that, at the beginning of the war, the North lacked leadership.
At the time of the Civil War there were significantly fewer slaves in the North than in the South. Many African Americans enjoyed full freedom in the north.

The South had superior generals. It also had a powerful patriotism and a belief in the justice of its cause.
North. South was mainly agricultural.
The North had the factories capable of making supplies and equipment for war.
The only real weakness IN THE BEGINNING of the war was the North's leadership. The North had the bigger population of males, a bigger navy, and quite obviously to anyone who could read and write (in those days)...the North had a giant of industrial might, when compared to the agricultural South.
