1850 - the new Compromise which had to appease the South with the Fugitive Slave Act, allowing official slave-catchers to hunt down runaways. This caused a highly emotive reaction in the North.

1854 - the attempt to organise a local vote to decide whether Kansas would be slave or free. This led to intimidation and bloodshed, foreshadowing the Civil War.

1857 - the verdict of the Supreme Court over a slave claiming his freedom. They invoked the Constitution, ruling that a man's property was sacred and slaves were property. This appeared to mean that there was no such thing as free soil.

1859 - the raid on the Government arsenal at Harper's Ferry by John Brown. This gave the abolitionists a bad name and raised tensions nationwide.
