Parts of North Dakota and Minnesota and small portions of South Dakota and Montana were ceded to the United States by Great Britain in the Treaty of 1818. All of the area known as Rupert's Land which was located south of the 49th parallel and west to the Rocky Mountains was ceded to the US.
