This is hard to quantify, as many positions that veterinarians are qualified for either don't advertise (such as many associate veterinarian positions at private practice clinics) or don't advertise specifically to veterinarians (this is common among government jobs that require a scientific background).

As of June 2013 in the United States, there were more small animal and mixed animal private practitioners than absolutely needed. However, other fields in veterinary medicine, including public health and research, have many open positions.
