All of the regular armor can be unlocked by beating the campaign on legendary and collecting all skulls. You can get the Katana (sword) on your back be getting the origanal 1000 gamerscore. There's also recon armor, which can only be unlocked if Bungie (the makers of Halo) give it to you.

The hayabusa armor is unlocked by finding all 13 skulls on campaigne mode and by getting a 49 achievements and/or 1000 gamerscore points.the skulls unlocks the Helmet, body armor, and shoulder peices. the 49 achievements/1000 gamerscore points unlocks the katana. The armor is exact replica of Ryu Hayabusa's armor from the ninja giaden games.Ryu Hayabusa makes a cameo in the Xbox 360 game Halo 3, as unlockable armor for Multiplayer called 'Hayabusa'. For the player to obtain the chest, shoulder, and helmet pieces of the armor they must collect all hidden Skulls in campaign mode. Additionally, if the player unlocks the original 49 achievements in the game, they are awarded the Katana body piece, which is a replica of Ryu's Dragon Sword. The sword is unusable as it would give players an additional weapon.

skulls are fun little mix ups in the game to get them you must play on normal , hard , or legendary some skulls require you to beat the game on normal or above but skulls can be found in some places SPOILER ALERT!!!!! i will give the location of the first skull its on the cliff to the right pick it up then your good :)
You dont get an achievement when you pick up a skull in halo 3?
Because its a silver skull. The silver skulls in halo 3 don't have achievements only the gold skulls do like iron and mystic. Hope i helped.
