On super Mario 64 DS how do you open the canon outside the castle?

When you get all 120 stars in the game, the cannon outside the castle will open. It will shoot you to the roof of the castle, where Yoshi will give you 99 lives. There is also an wing cap box on the roof for you to fly around the castle.

There's no way to get into the cannon with less than 120 stars, but there is a difficult to execute glitch that takes you to the top of the castle before getting 120 stars. It involves trying to climb the very steep hill on the right side of the castle.
