Nationalism was another reason - people started to feel strong feeelings towards their countries and were prepared to defend them. The main reason why the war became a world war was that long before 1914, the prominent countries started to make alliances. They promised help to each other which meant that if a country was attacked by a common enemy the ally would run and intervene in the conflict and help the attacked.
