Emperor Joseph II was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1765-90. Born in Vienna Austria, eldest of the Empress Maria Theresa and her husband Francis I.

It was an arranged marriage that Maria Theresa (the mother of Marie Antoinette and Empress of Austria) and Louis XV (the grandfather of Louis XVI and King of France) arranged. Austria and France had been long time enemies and Maria Theresa and Louis XV thought it might do good to their relationship to have their countries united by a marriage of their (grand-)children.

The romanov bodies were identified by using DNA from Prince Phillip (his grandmother was the sister to Empress Alexandria) and also from The Duke of Fife who is a direct matrilineal descendent of Queen Louise of Denmark as was Tsar Nicholas II.

However, according to the technical laws of descent, the right to the name Romanov was lost after the reign of Catherine the Great due to marriages by Empresses. The last member of the Romanov family was Czar Nicholas the II. He was murdered by the Bolsheviks along with his family. There are still Romanov family members around today, like Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna and Nicholas Romanov, Prince of Russia. Also Czar Nicholas had sisters who had children and of course had children themselves.
