Simon later climbed the mountain and recognised the body for what it was. He released the tangle of parachute lines. That same night, during the storm, the parachute lifted the body from the mountain top. The body drifted down over the jungle and across the lagoon. It was spotted by the boys at Jack's feast who mistook it for the beast.

Although at various times the boys think that it might be a snake-thing, a giant squid, a ghost or a winged creature with sharp teeth and claws it is none of the these things. The beast is simply the boys themselves, it is the capacity to do evil which lies inside us all.

∙ 14y agoSimon doubted the existence of the beast suggesting that it might simply be the boys themselves. When the beast was first mentioned, at the second meeting, when it was referred to a snake-thing or beastie, Ralph stated several time, and I quote, "But there is no beast." Later, after the vote in favour of ghosts in the meeting in chapter 5, Ralph says "The trouble is: Are there ghosts, Piggy? Or Beasts?" Piggy said, and I quote, "Course there aren't."

∙ 13y agoThe first person to mention the "beastie" is "the boy with the mulberry birthmark", who disappears shortly after, and we presume that he was consumed in the fire on the "other side" of the island.
The character Simon sees the "beast" on top of the mountain in "Lord of the Flies." However, it is later revealed that what he saw was actually the dead body of a pilot attached to a parachute.
