I'd say the same a the first dude, it's commonly found due to the tail, and shell.
One way I learned to identify the gender of a turtle is my the length of its claws. Males have longer claws than females, however, you cannot really tell the difference in lengths of it's claws until it has matured enough. Another way to identify the sex of your turtle is by the size of it's tail. Males also have longer and fatter tails than females do.
If they are the same kind of turtles and you know their behaviors you can tell that way. For example I have 3 Central American Ornate Wood turtles. (1 is still young so she is much smaller). Their shells both look very similar. But I know that Big Momma is very outgoing and Bertha is shy. So when I pick one of them up the one that pokes her head out is Big Momma.
there is an old turtle myth and legend. it says you can tell how old a turtle is by counting the squares on it`s shell bottom.

It depends on the turtle. Some turtles want a tank with mostly water and just a little land, some turtles want a dry tank with just drinking water. You need to find out what kind it is to find out what kind of environment and food it needs. If you purchased it at a pet store, an employee there should have the information you need or at least be able to get you a book with instructions for care. If it is a turtle you found outside I strongly recommend that you return it to the safest place you can that is still nearby where you found it. If this is not possible, or it is not safe for the turtle where you found it, or perhaps you inherited it from a friend or something like that... the pet store is still your best bet. Take the turtle in so they can more accurately identify it.
A pet turtle can be about a 50 years old.
