It is fairly easy. All you do is slowly place your cat's paws in the litterbox. Move her paws so to act like she is digging in the litter. Do this for a while, and she will begin to use it.

Warning: Do not force your cat to come near the box! This will cause her to be scared of it, and will avoid the litterbox. Instead, do it nice and slow and gentle. If she struggles, which she will most likely do, gently but firmly hold onto her legs. Not too rough. If she tries to flee, let her go. Try it again a little later.

Watch your cat after it eats or drinks. Once it starts peeing or pooping, quickly pick it up and put it in the litterbox (I suggest having the litterbox set up first). Do this multiple times. Then your cat will understand this is the place it needs to do its business, not anywhere else. If you'd like to save some money, you can make your own litterbox. All you need is a cardboard box, a plastic bag, and some kitty litter (no, I have no clue how to make homemade litter. so get out and buy some). Unfold the box so there all walls all around it except for in the front (so if you have a little kitten it has an easier time getting in). Put the plastic bag in the litterbox, then put some litter in. Follow the directions in the first paragraph and you can start litter training your kittums! :)

When your kitten starts going to the toilet elsewhere, place her in the litter tray and keep doing that so that she finally gets it, and goes in the tray herself, every time she does it, reward her with a stroke and a cuddle, or a toy like a small ball.

Was your cat from outside? If he/she was, then here's what you do.

How to Litterbox-Train a cat.

Take some soil and litter, perferably pine litter, and mix it together. The cat will smell the dirt and think, "Hmm. That reminds me of home. I'd better use it here."

If the cat does not do that right away, keep the cat in a bathroom, or somewhere cozy with litterbox, food, water, toys, plenty of space to play, and a human, like a kitchen, or a bathroom. Do not start off on carpets, unless you wanted messed up carpets.

Every time the cat begins to squat somewhere to urinate or poop, then pick it up, one hand under the forelegs and on under the bottom and tail and carry it to the litterbox. Hold the cat at least 3-6 inches from the litterbox and drop it in. If the cat hears the crunch of the litter under its paws, it might get "Oh! I have to use the bathroom in here! Now I get it!"

Be patient, and never yell at your cat. NEVER. They don't know, they don't get it yet. But when they do, reward your cat with pats or small treats. As the cats begin to use the litterbox, slowly wean them off of the dirt until there is no dirt left at all.

Good luck with your new adoption!

You can train the cat to use the litterbox if you bring it to it often when it is a kitten. Also they will go to the bathroom anywhere they can hid it. They will go the the bathroom in laundry too. Spraying is different from going to the bathroom. So if you have a male cat it could be spraying to mark its territory.

However you do it, litter training your kitten is going to be a bit messy. Pretty much what you have to do is put the litter box in the room that your kitten is most familiar with. (It is a smart thing to familiarize your kitten to the bathroom:) or at least a room with tiles.) When your cat begins to pee or poo it will crouch. DON'T confuse sitting position with peeing position!!! This can confuse the kitten and will take longer for it to know what the litter box is for. The difference is that when a kitten has to pee it will stick its tail straight up in the air while sitting. When you see your cat in this position, quickly lift it into the litterbox. The kitten will continue its pee in the litterbox. You will have to do this a couple of times until the kitten smells its scent in the litterbox and finds out that it has to pee in there. Make sure that when you see it go to the litterbox by itsself to pee/poo, give it a treat and make sure it knows that it's done something good. DO NOT lift it out of the litterbox, distract it while it's doing its business or move the litterbox until your kitten has got the hang of it.

I hope this helped, and good luck :D

Why do cats stop using litter box?

The litter box may not be clean enough for the cat or the cat feels uncomfortable in the litter box; a litter box should be cleaned every day or every second day, depending on how many cats you have. Maybe the cat does not know where the litter box is, if you move the litter box and don't show the cat its new location the cat won't know where the box is. The cat also mightn't be trained to use a litter box properly and might need a little help using it. Also, if a cat is very old, they mightn't realise they have to use the litter box or they do not have time to get to the litter box before they urinate etc. . The cat could also be sick.if your cat is just a kitten then the box might be too clean the kitten must smell where the toilet is.

Is it good if your cat needs help finding his or her litter box?

it is not because if your cat cant find his/her own litter box he/she will start going on the carpet , the towels laying on the floor ,or go on the dirty clothes in the laundry room.

Why do cats go to the bathroom on the floor and not in the litter box?

Cats will poop on the floor if you do not train them to. If you train your cat, and it still poops on the floor, spray him/her will a spray bottle filled with water, and if they do not stop either way, they were raised the wrong way, and you will have to put down something on the floor that is noisy when you step on it, on the place they go to the bathroom.

What age can the kitten stop using the litter tray?

Most people make there kitten use the litter box there whole life to make sure it doesn't go to the bathroom on everything. But if the cat goes in and out of your house, you could most likely train it like a dog to go outside. Unless your cat is like the one from "Date Movie" and it uses the toilet and makes weird faces. haha. ;p

How do you potty train an adult cat?

Potty training my cats were very simple. All I did was get a litter box put in my bathroom and filled it with litter and then just put the cat in the litter box and they just knew what to do and now they where to go to do their business. It also a good idea if you have multiple cats to have more than one litter box if they are inside cats. another problem is if you have a door on your litter box I'd recommend taking that off for a couple days to get them used to the litter box first. Now if you have outside cats you don't have to worry about any of this. Another thing is it might be to dark for them so maybe leave the light on.

Why is your female spayed cat pooping on the floor?

that cat could be doing that if the litter box is dirty or your cat could have a kidney problem Sometimes, if you have too many cats and not enough litter boxes, this happens. Also, if you don't clean the litter box often enough, the cat many get disgusted and just go wherever else it can. Either that, or your cat just doesn't know how to go in the litterbox.

How do i train my cat to a litterbox?

Popular wisdom seems to be that you just move the litter tray nearer the door and eventually outside and into a flower bed. Then you can remove it altogether. If the cat is small you can go out with them and scratch around in the dirt with your fingers, or pick up their paw and use it to scratch the dirt. Instincts kick in and they know what this means. It worked for all of our kittens. Just be careful while doing that though, because some kittens HATE IT when you get a hold of their paw and simulate pawing... They just IGNORE the act all together sometimes if you do things that they didn't intend to do.
