It's a myth that you can cure a wasp or bee sting by neutralizing it. There are three reasons:

  • To neutralize a chemical you have to add exactly the correct amount of the neutralizing chemical so they balance. This is not possible if you don't know exactly what you are neutralizing.
  • The venom has been injected under the surface of the skin. Anything applied to the surface of the skin that is strong enough to reach the venom will almost certainly do more harm than good.
  • Both bee and wasp venom are complex cocktails of substances, each of which has its own effect, and most of these cannot be countered by simple 'neutralization'.
Under normal circumstances the effects of the sting will pass in quite a short time. The only sensible treatment for a sting is to treat the symptoms: a painkiller such as paracetamol if required; a cold compress or an anti-histamine cream for the swelling.
Any abnormal symptoms such as nausea, faintness, or swelling away from the sting site require medical attention. Loss of consciousness or difficulty with breathing require immediate urgent medical care.

What happens if you are giving the wrong anti-venom?

Using the wrong anti-venom can potentially lead to an allergic reaction or worsen the symptoms of the venomous bite or sting. It is important to properly identify the type of venom involved and use the appropriate anti-venom to effectively treat the toxicity. Consulting with a healthcare professional or poison control center is crucial if there is uncertainty about the type of venom or appropriate treatment.

Are black wasps deadly?

Bumble bee stings themselves are not poisonous. Many people have an allergic reaction and need medical help immediately. An allergic reaction includes swelling of the throat and tongue, vomiting, difficulty breathing, fainting, and anaphylactic shock. If no allergic reaction occurs, remove the stinger, ice and elevate the area of the sting, take over-the-counter pain relievers, and apply calamine lotion for the itch.

Do velvet ants sting that much?

How long does it take for the burn stop from a bee sting?

If the stinger is removed immediately then it should hurt for a few hours and may itch for a few days afterward. The longer the stinger is left in the longer it will take to heal. You should not scratch or rub the sting as this will delay healing time as well. If you haven't had a tetanus shot recently you might consider one, especially if you have been stung several times.
