That is how they were designed! A mathematical model based on the physics had to be developed for each bomb type.

  1. the MK-I "Little Boy" gun bomb was easily designed using only slide rule and mechanical calculator type computations
  2. the MK-III "Fatman" implosion bomb was too complex for those methods, its design was worked out using multiple simulation runs on a room full of electromechanical IBM punchcard unit record machines
  3. Edward Teller's first hydrogen bomb design "The Super" was simulated in a two month long run of the ENIAC electronic digital computer that completed at the end of January 1946, the mathematical model clearly demonstrated that it could not work
  4. the first hydrogen bomb "Ivy Mike" was very complex, its design was worked out by using multiple simulation runs on the MANIAC electronic digital computer, one of the fastest computers available in 1952
  5. the various nuclear weapons design labs in countries around the world have always been one of the major buyers of the highest performance supercomputers that can be made in each time period, so that they can run their nuclear weapons models to design, verify, evaluate safety, etc. each weapon
