The Rolling Stones, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers And Crosby, Stills & Nash all played at the Altamont free concert. The Grateful Dead were scheduled to play but cancelled shortly before their appearance because of the violence because the Hell's Angels allegedly were hired by the Stones for security.

Neil Young had also been a member of The Squires, The Mynah Birds (with Rick James) and made two solo albums (one of which is his debut with Crazy Horse) before joining CSNY.
