What is an otherkin?
The short answer is that an otherkin is someone who identifies either partly or fully as a nonhuman being. These beings can be any thing fromextinct animals to morden day pets, to dragons, and elves and faries. Otherkin is NOT the same as clynical lycanthropy. Otherkin, for the majority, have no belife in physical shifting, and nderstand that physacilly they are nothing more or less than human. The small percentage who do are generaly younger otherkin who soon grow out of the idea. Certain types of otherkin however do believe in mental changes. Otherking who identify as wolves, for example, will often shift their mind to a more wolf like state. However, someone who identifies as a farie will not have these mental changes. Are therians just the religious nut-jobs of the furry world?
No, you can be part of the Therian/otherkin community and be a furry, but you do not have to be a furry to be part of the otherkin community. So the answer to your question is no therians are not 'nut-job' furries. Otherkin is also not a religion.

Why aren't people with Species Dysphoria accepted like people with Gender Dysphoria?
They are not even close to the same thing. Being a man or a woman is within human experience and is being what is natural for humans. In transsexualism, you are becoming more like what you already are. If you have the nature of a woman and you were supposed to be born with a vagina, but were robbed of that, then you are still a woman. It is not natural for a human to feel like a dog, cat, duck, or whatever. A female human is still a human, but a pet or farm animal is not. Another thing that people want to compare with transsexualism is an amputation fetish, or other forms of body dimorphism. Nobody is supposed to be born handicapped, but many are supposed to be born women or men. Undoubtedly, there are some who probably would feel more comfortable with themselves in a more handicapped state. But that is not the typical or expected state of things, and likely has very little if any biological basis. Nor is transsexualism the same as cosmetic surgery addiction or not accepting oneself. When it comes to their surgeries, there is an end point in which they become satisfied enough to function in society without preoccupation with their body. The reason they get surgeries is because they accept the real person inside and have a reasonable vision for what they should be like.

Many otherkin website will have certain pages or forums dedicated to specific species. For example Pariah Pack 2, an online therian website, has an entire page of their bestiary dedicated to tigers. You could always try joining a larger non specific website and asking around if anyone knows of any species specific sites.
