if the player and his agent have a contract, they normally will have a "guarantee clause" somewhere in the contract. so basically he'll get so much money "for sure" before he even sets foot on the field. if he gets hurt the 1st play of the season....he'll normally get paid for the rest of the season, although he only played one down. however if its a career ending injury, he'll normally get paid for that one season, but NOT for the rest of his contract.
