A factory assembly line is literally a line where something is put together, typically on a conveyor belt of some sort. The conveyor belt runs through the factory and stops at multiple points (sometimes they're slow enough that they don't have to stop). At each point, a specialized worker or robot adds his particular part to the line. In a car factory, for example, a different person or robot would install the engine, the tires, the doors, etc.
