In both WW1 and Ww2, German ribbon medals, such as long service medals, and pin-back medals such as the Iron Cross 1st Class ... and combat badges such as the Tank Assault badge, were attached by sewn loops so that they could easily be removed while laundering the uniform. In other words, a tailor made two small embroidered loops of thread on a tunic pocket, for example, and the Iron Cross 1st Cl. was attached there. Long ribbon bars were worn above the pocket, much as they are on US uniform jackets, except that US ribbon bars are pinned directly to the garment. The Germans made two exceptions, i.e., the Knight's Cross worn by means of a neck ribbon, and the Iron Cross 2nd Cl. and Russian campaign medals, for both of which only the ribbon itself was worn, and affixed through a button hole even with the top of the chest pocket.

How was velcro invented?

The idea for Velcro came to George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, after returning from a walk in the Alps with his dogs. He examined the burrs stuck to both his jacket and the dogs' fur under a microscope. After much experimentation, he discovered that when sewn under hot infrared light, nylon formed hooks that were perfect for the hook side of the fastener. Making the looped side was another problem entirely. Nylon thread was resilient and when heated would retain its shape but it had to be cut in just the right spot so that it could be stuck and unstuck repeatedly. Eventually, when he was about to give up, he cut the tops off of the loops and created hooks that match up perfectly with the loops.

What did Americans wear during the civil war wear?

The answer to this question depends on several factors including what unit they were in, where they were from, where they were at, and what year of the war it was. The simplest answer would be that most Union volunteers wore uniforms consisting of dark blue kersey wool jackets and sky blue kersey wool trousers. Confederate soldiers wore a vast array of different color wool and jean wool uniforms ranging from light grey to dark brown and everything in between. The Union went with standardized uniform sizes, presewn instead of tailored, and "uniformity", and it saved time and expenses, even if the fits weren't always great. (It was a first try.) "Ladder badges" sometimes identified units on Union uniforms. The South went with privately-sewn and tailored uniforms, and variations were plenty. Equipment from unit to unit varied too but, simply put, every soldier carried a cartidge box (to hold their rounds), cap box (to hold their percussion caps), bayonet w/ sheath, and a belt to hold all of it on. A haversack was carried to hold the soldiers food as well as a canteen for the soldier to drink from. A knapsack carried the rest of the soldiers equipment including blanket, gum blanket, and any extra rounds, clothing, and/or personal items they might happen to have.
