# How do you write a fraction as a decimal and then as a percent?

Let's look at an example and you will see. Take 1/2, which is is the same as 5/10, well that is .5. What we did was to take the fraction and rewrite it with a denominator that was 10, 100, 1000, or some power of 10. So 1/5 is 2/10 so it is .2, and 4/5 if 8/10 so it is .8. Some are harder like 1/3 These are repeating decimals whereas the first example was a terminating one. The best way to do these it to divide 3 into 1 by long division and look to see where it repeats.

Sometimes the decimal will repeat only after a certain number of places. Such as .124333333...

You can easily convert to percent by multiplying the decimal you have by 100. .5x100=50% for example.
