This information is for the US only: For Major League Players - There are 30 Major League teams each with a 40 man roster. 30 x 40 = 1200 Then, on average, each team has 6 farm teams in its system with a roster of 25 to 30 players. So 6 x 30 x 30 = 5400. So in the United States there are approximately 6600 professional baseball players in the MLB and MiLB. Now do you also want to count players in the Independant Leagues as professional baseball players? Also I know that there is a huge system in Japan, Central America and South America. No clue as to find out how many professional players are in those countries.

A baseball player's salary will not change from the Majors to the Minors if he has a Major League contract. There are minor league contracts for those players.

Yes. The players in the minor leagues are being paid a salary to play baseball. This, by definition, makes the minor leagues professional as the players are making, or trying to make, a livelihood from playing baseball.
