In a game between Montreal and Boston on Mar.13, 1955 , Richard deliberately tried to injure Hal Laycoe of the Bruins. He was assessed a match penalty and in the resulting melee hit linesman Cliff Thompson. As a result Richard was suspended for the remainder of the season and the playoffs. Feelings ran high among both fans and non-fans in Montreal and during the next game between Montreal and Detroit, league president Clarence Campbell was pelted with debris and someone set of a teargas cannister. The game was forfeited to the Red Wings and the Forum was ordered evacuated. Fans spilled out of theForum , and joined by many others outside ,started the rioting that destroyed much of the neighbourhood around the Forum area.
