Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy, was brutally killed in Mississippi in 1955 by two white men, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam. They were acquitted by an all-white jury despite overwhelming evidence, but later openly admitted to the murder in a magazine interview.

On August 24, 1955, Emmett Till entered Roy Bryant's store and was paying his wife Carolyn Bryant for candy, bubblegum, and a soft drink. Till allegedly "wolf whistled" at her. Although Carolyn did not tell her husband about the incident, word got around quickly. On August 28, 1955 at 2 a.m., Roy Bryant and his half brother, J.W. Milam found Till sleeping in his uncle's cabin. They carried Till away. Three days later, Till's corpse was found in the depths of the Tallahatchie River with a bullet hole through his head and many other serious injuries.
