Best Answer

It is about the size of a tennis ball, containing cork inside and two pieces of leather stitched on the outside in the same pattern as a tennis ball, but with the edges of the pieced of leather forming a rim. See the photo from the attached link.

How can you score in hurling?

The goal is H-shaped with a net below the crossbar, similar to a soccer goal and rugby goalposts being stuck together. Getting the ball over the bar gives one point and getting the ball into the net gives 3 points. Scoring is mainly done by hitting the ball with the Hurling stick. The ball can be kicked but not be thrown for a score.

Is Hurling better than Gaelic Football?

Hurling and Gaelic Football are two different sports. It can be hard to compare them. Hurling is the fastest field game in the world, the course of a game can change quickly as a team trailing can come back into contention very quickly and a very good match is something special to witness. Gaelic Football is also special though and you can get very good matches in that too. Hurling is more unique, making it that bit extra special. Some people prefer Hurling and others prefer Gaelic Football. So it is really down to the individual to decide. Most fans watch both sports, even if they have a preference for one.

The general rule of thumb is 10% of body weight to start with. If you are hurling the ball down, you may need to move to a heavier ball. If you are experiencing discomfort, then drop to a lighter ball.

What are some games that come from hurling?

Camogie, which is the women's version of Hurling, is the main one. The rules are very similar. You have other unofficial games, like long puck competitions, to see who can hit the ball furthest, or over a set course with the fewest pucks. This is known as the Poc Fada, and there is an annual competition for it in August each year, in the Cooley mountains in Co. Louth. You have games where players try to hit the crossbar with the sliothar (name of the ball Hurling is played with).

Where was hurling founded?

Hurling is an Irish field sport using a ball and stick, loosely related to sports like Hockey, Shinty and Lacrosse. References to Hurling have been found as far back as 1272BC. In 1884, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was founded in Hayes Hotel, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. One of its roles was to formalise and promote Hurling. Since the GAA came into being Hurling has become a well organised sport with well defined rules. As in any sport its rules are occasionally changed. The GAA oversees such changes.
