The first games had one event: the stadion, a race from one end of the stadium to the other. Different races were added over time, followed by boxing and wrestling and then chariot racing.
The first Olympic Games were not in Athens - they were held at Olympia in Elis on the Peloponnese. The initial event was simply a footrace. It was later expanded to various other events - eg javelin, discus, boxing, wrestling, etc, and then to chariot races and so on.
The first sporting event to be to publicly broadcasted was a boxing match in 1921.
