It is not good to have shin splints. shin splints are are over compensation of calf muscles that are not used enough or strong enough for the amount of training being done by them. shin splints can result in stress fractures if training continues with out adequate rest.
Using leg curl machine or leg extension machine, hip and abductor machine, as well as squats. Do calf raises to increase calf strength weakness in calves can lead to shin splints.
Train really hard and start off medium and then start getting faster as 400m is not that far to run ALL RIGHT.
