Play Basketball from a very young age to allow yourself ample time to develop the skills it takes to perform on a professional level. Play in pick-up games anytime you can. These informal games will pit you against some of the toughest competition you'll ever see.

Attend basketball camps and clinics to hone your skills and work with experienced people such as coaches and older players. Practice every day, continuing to use the skills that you learned at camp.

Get the basics down as soon as possible. Shooting from the free throw line, a simple layup, a pick-and-roll pattern, passing--these are the major exercises that you need to make second nature.

Try out and play on basketball teams throughout middle school and high school. Be sure to stay in shape and up to your skill level throughout the summer. This can be done by attending training camps, coaching younger kids or joining a summer recreational team.

Know when college or pro scouts are going to be at your high school. Not only play the game of your life for scouts; introduce yourself and your parents after the game and tell scouts or coaches whether you are interested in attending their school.

Contact the universities you want to attend and talk to their coaching staff for the basketball team. Let then know that you want to play for them. If the school is nearby, consider a visit and check out the team practices. Also, study the coach of the college team you're intersted in--this way you'll know what he expects out of his players. Is he a defense-heavy coach? Does he like the run-and gun offense? These are the things that will attract coachs and scouts to you.
