It most certainly can be, especially if you have a good, worthy and dependable mount between your knees that's been there and done that. It can be a fun way to "connect" with a horse too, though many feel that the best way to connect with a horse is by doing a bit of ground-work first before climbing into the saddle.
Realy all you would call riding a horse for fun is just horse riding because you are not having a lesson if you are riding a horse for fun other wise that would be called horse riding lesson. I have been horse riding for a while know and it is very fun and all i call it is horse riding. I hope this has answered your question!

To gain experience! When you grow older, you can say you've already been in horse- back riding and you know the general feeling of riding on horse back. Plus, it's fun! You can also win trophies and go to competitions...have fun!

Find a good riding instructor friend, or parent that will be with you when riding to help you. Find a horse that is at your level, not beyond and not below, take your time it is not a rush, and have fun, do things that are fun for you and fun for your horse. It all comes down to what kind of riding you use them for. Racing, just for fun, work, etc. you'll Usually get about 20+ years (average lifespan is 30 years for a horse. You have to wait for your horse to mature though
Horse backriding is good because 1. You can exercise you and the horse your riding 2. It is used for physicle therapy 3. It's fun! and you can hump it like crazy
