The Brewers began playing in the National League in the 1998 season
Because the National League has been in existence longer than the American League ... the National League's first season as a major league was 1876 and the American League's first season as a major league was 1901.
The American League began as a minor league called the Western League whose first season was 1894. The named was changed to American League for the 1900 season and the AL declared itself a major league for the 1901 season.
When the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Arizona Diamondbacks were scheduled to begin play in the American League and the National League, respectively, the new alignment for the 1998 season would have given each league 15 teams. To avoid odd numbers and scheduling headaches, the Milwaukee Brewers agreed to move from the American League to the National League after the 1997 season. After the 2012 season, the two leagues will have 15 teams apiece when the Houston Astros of the National League Central move to the American League West.
The major league pitcher with the highest ERA in a single season who pitched 100 or more innings was Bill Chamberlain. He recorded an ERA of 7.74 in the 1893 season while playing for the St. Louis Browns.

Each year in the MLB an award is given out to the best pitcher in each league(the American League, and the National League) called the Cy Young award(named after a great pitcher in the 1900's). The winners of the two Cy Young awards for the 2010 season were Roy Halladay, and Felix Hernandez.
