It is called rationalising the denominator.
It is called rationalisation [of the denominator].
Generally, the process involves multiplying the numerator and denominator of the fraction by the same number. This number is selected so that the original denominator becomes rational. In the process the numerator may become rational. If the original denominator is of the form √b then you multiply the numerator and denominator by √b/√b. If the original denominator is of the form a+√b then you multiply the numerator and denominator by (a-√b)/(a-√b). NOTE change of sign. There is a similar process, using complex conjugates, if the denominator is a complex number.
To simplify a fraction, the numerator and denominator are divided by a common factor. The simplification process is continued until there is no common factor. By dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor no further simplification is possible.
if its a whole number times a fraction you put a line and a denominator of 1. then, multiply the denominators with each other and numerators with each other
To simplify a fraction using prime numbers, find the prime factors of both the numerator and denominator. Then, divide the numerator and denominator by their common prime factors. Repeat this process until there are no common prime factors left. The resulting fraction will be simplified to its simplest form.
It is called rationalisation [of the denominator].
"rationalizing" the denominator
process by which a fraction containing radicals in the denominator is rewritten to have only rational numbers in the denominator.
divide the denominator by the numerator
A fraction is a kind of number: it cannot have an answer. You want an answer to some process that is applied to the fraction but we have no hope of guessing what process that might be.
There are two equivalent ways: 1. Find the highest common factor (HCF) of the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) of the fraction. If it is 1, the fraction is already in its lowest terms. If not, divided both, numerator and denominator, by the HCF. The fraction is now in its lowest form. 2. Find any common factor of the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) of the fraction. If the only common factor is 1, the fraction is already in its lowest terms. If not, divided both, numerator and denominator, by the HCF. Repeat the process until the only common factor is 1. The fraction is then in its lowest form.
You divide the numerator and denominator of the fraction by their highest common factor. Alternatively, divide them by any commo factor and repeat that process until the common factor is 1.
I will show the process by converting 1½ to a decimal and then reverse the process. First, you must multiply the denominator of the fraction by thewhole number. (in this case 2 X 1.) You will then add the numerator of the fraction to your current number.(2 X 1 + 1 = 3) Then place the number that you currently have(3)on top of the original denominator.(2) Your answer will be numerator:3 Denominator:2- an improper fraction. If you have an improper fraction like three halves, the fraction can be simplified to a mixed number. To do the conversion, divide three by two or ask your self how many times 3 goes into 2.(Did you know that a fraction is simply another way of showing division?) If three is correctly divided by two the answer will be 1½.
To change a fraction into a decimal divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply the result by 100 to change it into a percentage as for example 3/4 is 0.75 as a decimal and when multiplied by 100 it is 75%
