Best Answer

"Rio" written like this is the capital city of the Brazilian state of "Rio de Janeiro". Everyone in Portugal would recognize it that way.

But in the context of a conversation the word could also mean river, because the word for river is "rio".

But Portuguese people don't say the name of the river and then "rio", just say the name of the river.

Everyone learn the names of the rivers in school so they are mentioned without the subject, like famous rivers such as "the Mississippi, etc
