The most common use for the term attempt in Baseball is related to hitting. When a batter "check swings," it is up to the umpires to determine if he made a conscious attempt to swing at the ball. This is a gray area in the rulebook and it is one of the toughest judgment calls an umpire has to make. Most umpires base their call on the path of the head of the bat in relation to the plate. If the umpire at first or third can see the cup of the bat during a check swing, they will 9.9 times out of 10 confirm that it was a swing. However, there are some umpires out there who make a call based on their own personal opinion if the batter "tried" to swing at the pitch, realized too late that it was a ball and tried to hold back. Again, a gray area, but sometimes a crucial judgment call.

Another category where "attempt" is used is when a baserunner is trying to steal. Anytime a runner takes off from a base it is considered a steal attempt. This is what you would see on a stat sheet when documenting a players steals vs. steal attempts. Better base stealers have a higher steal to steal attempt ratio (duh haha).

That's all that comes to mind right now so if anyone would like to add anything please feel free.
