Answer The first tie breaker is head to head play. That is pretty easy to determine, but with the new wild card things can get pretty messy. Consider a massive tie up of say five teams. All of the teams have identical records (improbable but possible). That would take some sorting out! It used to be a one game playoff - aka October 2nd, 1978's Yankees/Red Sox playoff when Bucky Dent hit the home run.

Answer

head to head games

Answer

Head to head would only determine the winner if both teams are guaranteed to make the playoffs anyway. If the loser would be eliminated, there would be a one-game playoff after all.

The packers had an amazing regular season in 2011 going 15-1. Unfortunatly they did not do as well in the playoffs and lost in the divisional round.
