It is even more vital that you take precautions and are aware of your surroundings while riding a bicycle at night, even more so than during the day (cycling, particularly on roads, is ALWAYS dangerous). Even during the day many drivers have difficulty seeing cyclists on the road, and thousands of accidents (and deaths) occur each year even during the daytime.
At night, without any reflectors or lights the average cyclists will be effectively invisible. You are required BY LAW to have a red reflector prominently displayed on the back of your bicycle while riding at night, at least 38mm in diameter. Orange reflectors should be fitted to both wheels, as well as the front and back of the pedals. For the front of your bike, a bright quartz halogen is recommended for maximum visibility (remember, while the orange reflectors are not required, you MUST have a red reflector (38mm+) on the back of your bike and a continuous white light mounted on the front as well). As mentioned previously, this MUST be CONTINUOUS (a flashing light can be used in conjunction with the continuous light if desired).
Please keep in mind that cycling at night is dangerous, and these measures are required for your own safety. Ride safely.
