Why did the US agree to become involved in the Korean and Vietnam war?

Both the Korean and Vietnam wars occurred during the "cold war". This was the time after WWII that the U.S and the Soviet Union were having an arms race against each other. Another aspect of the cold war was that each country was trying to turn many other countries either communist (like Soviet Union) or democratic (like the U.S). Both the Vietnam and Korean wars were proxy wars. What this means is that they were wars where each country used a weaker country to fight "for" them. In both Vietnam and Korea , the Soviets had North Korea and North Vietnam and we had the south parts of both. Basically both wars were a way for the U.S and Russia to fight without actually declaring war against each other specifically. The U.S won the Korean War against Russia, and Russia won the Vietnam war against the U.S.

Which side did the Montagnards fight for in the Vietnam War?

they fought with the us against the NVA, this is correct i read a book about it, the other answers will tell you they fought for their own but they volunteered to fight for the US Montagnards are a distinct culture of peoples living in the central highlands of Vietnam, and have historically been ostracized from the other cultures in Vietnam; so they had/have their own unique "side". However, interestingly enough, in the early days of the Viet Minh rebellion against the French in the 1940's, there were several prominent Montagnard members. Later in the conflict, however, Montangards were successfully used by U.S. special ops forces to fight against the North Vietnamese / VietCong. == == I would add that the "yards" were paid mercenary troops who only asked for US support to protect their wives and kids while they were away, and in most cases, they were trusted to be capable fighters, and not run away like the ARVN would do.

Why is Vietnam a quagmire?

U.S involvement in the Vietnam War was called a quagmire because the Vietnam War became worse for the U.S as they went further into the war. The U.S and its ally South Vietnam were unable to defeat North Vietnam and its Vietcong allies. The U.S was unable to effectively remove troops from Vietnam without feeling like they lost the fight against containment of Communism. Public opinion shifted from support of the war to antiwar sentiment.

Why did US government agreed to become involved in the Korean and Vietnam wars?

the USA decided that they wanted to stop the spread of communism which would trigger the domino theory. The domino theory was that if a single country fell to communism then the surrounding countries would fall as well. The USA had also signed the Truman Doctrine that would enable them to go into any country that was at threat of falling to communism and fight to prevent it. Thus the USA decided that Korea and Vietnam were at threat of falling to communism and intended to stop the spread of communism in Asia

Why were Americans against sending troops to Korea and Vietnam?

The Korean war didn't witness the anti-war sentiments that Nam did due to its short duration (3 yrs). People were against the Viet war because of the military draft. Like today, most folks don't give a hoot about any war...unless they're forced to have to fight it (like being conscripted)...THEN THEY CARE!
