The pass-back rule came into effect in the early 90's in order to eliminate time-wasting by defenders and goal keepers.

The AFU managed to persuade the Football Association and the Football League not to introduce maximum wages. When Liverpool won the First division championship in the 1900-01 season their players were on £7, which with bonuses could reach £10. The Football Association passed a rule at its AGM that set the maximum wage of professional footballers playing in the Football League at £4 a week. It also abolished the paying of all bonuses to players. This new rule was brought in at the beginning of the 1901-02 season. http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Fwages.htm

The term "soccer" was coined in 1871 upon the foundation of the Rugby Football Union, an offshoot rule set originating from a disagreement during the codification of theLondon Rules(now known as IFAB'sLaws of the Game) that govern Association football, in order to differentiate the different versions of football. The word itself was derived from the third through the fifth letters of "Association" ("soc") and used in a diminutive manner, much like those who call it "Football" might shorten the name to "footy".Although "soccer" is not technically the proper name for the sport, it is more correct than "football". Soccer is a reference to a specific rule set, while "football" is actually a type of game, but is commonly used to refer to the type of football most common to them.
