Lake Lloyd was created when a hole was dug in the infield to use the dirt to build up the banking of the track. Because Florida has such a low elevation and high water table, the hole filled with water.
The first Indianapolis 500 was held on May 30, 1911 and was won by Ray Harroun. The race was called the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, a/k/a the International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race.
Ground breaking for Iowa Speedway was on June 21, 2005 and the track officially opened on September 15, 2006.
