Ballet flats (or pompes) started out as a male item but has been appropriated by women and is now percieved as a wholly female Item. Consequently, it is taking a while to catch on as unisex but soon just like ear piercing, pink, make up, leggings, etc., will become unisex the more men wear them. Now more men are starting to wear ballet flats that the fashion industry is catching on and have there own version of male ballet flats so I'm pretty sure that in due time Ballet flats will be part of every men closet, for those who don't already own some that is.
