Ice rinks come in different shapes and sizes depending on the purpose. Some rinks are made for speed skating. For short tracks, the normal size is 30 by 60 meters, a measurement that is used in official Olympic Games. For long tracks, the average length is 400 meters. For the winter sport called bandy, teams usually compete in rinks that measure 90 to 110 meters by 45 to 65 meters.
That all depends on the skater, obviously, and what distance they're skating. Quick research reports that they can average 30 mph, but sprint up to around 37 mph.see this link:How_fast_do_speed_skaters_go
It was invented in Poland, a long long time ago, I'm not quite sure when though. the first speed skate was a animal bone straped to the bottom of a man's boot. he did this to try and get down the frozen river faster (during the winter).

As most people would say, practice. You can get better if you practice. I come to the ice skating rink every Sunday and I have become better at so many things.
