Five pitchers are used in a starting rotation for baseball teams. Sometimes in the post-season teams will use a rotation consisting of their best three or four pitchers only, to maximize their chances of winning a series.
No, not a batter. Pitchers have struck out the side, and there have been unassisted triple plays though
Sandy Koufax won the Cy Young award three times. In 1963 for the Dodgers he went 25-5 with 306 strikeouts and a 1.88 ERA. In 1965, he won his second Cy Young going 26-8, with 382 strikeouts and a 2.04 ERA. His final Cy Young was the following season in 1966. He went 27-9, had 317 strikeouts and finished with a 1.73 ERA. In all three Cy Young seasons he led the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts giving him the triple crown each year. In 1963, not only did he win the Cy Young, but he won the NL MVP.
In 2009, three pitchers were tied with the most wins in the American League. They each won 19 games.CC Sabathia - New York YankeesJustin Verlander - Detroit TigersFelix Hernandez - Seattle Mariners
If you include pitchers (you should; however, someold-timers would disagree), the best player in the 1960s was Sandy Koufax. No other single player dominated the way Koufax did until an arthritic elbow forced him to retire after the 1966 season. He won 3 Cy Youngs, won 25+ games three times (and was on track to do that in two other seasons until injuries shortened them). He led the National League in ERA 5 straight years and led the league in strikeouts 3 times, including a league record 382 in 1965. That's what I call domination.
Three Strikeouts in one game is called the Silver Sombrero. Four strikeouts in one game is called the Golden Sombrero. Golden Sombrero has always been 4 in a game, but Silver sombrero I think is just a take off of this. In the past, this was referred to as a Hat Trick.
For Batters:Home Runs, RBIs, and batting average For Pitchers:ERA, strikeouts, and wins
Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers won the American League Triple Crown in 2012 with a season average of .330, 139 RBIs, and 44 home runs. He was the first batter to win all three categories since Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox did it in 1967. Jake Peavy in 2007 won the NL Pitchers Triple Crown with 19 Wins a 2.54 ERA and 240 Strikeouts Johan Santana won in the AL in 2006 Randy Johnson in the NL in 2002
There can be an infinite number of strikeouts in one inning. Usually and most of the time there are three but there are times it can be 4 or more. If the catcher drops a third strike and the batter reaches first base safely, that is still recorded as a strikeout for the pitcher.
