Isshin-Ryu (ä¸€å¿ƒæµ Isshin-ryÅ«?) is a style of Okinawan karate founded by Tatsuo Shimabuku (島袋 é¾å¤«) and named by him on 15 January 1956. Isshin-RyÅ« karate is largely a synthesis of Shorin-ryÅ« karate, GojÅ«-ryÅ« karate, and kobudÅ. The name means, literally, "one heart way". As of 1989 there were 336 branches of Isshin-ryÅ« throughout the world (as recorded by the IWKA), most of which are concentrated in the United States

There really is no equivalent word for karate. Many will use the style of karate, such as Shidokan or Shotokan or Isshinryu, but that is a sub-set of karate rather than saying the same thing. And karate is a sub-set of martial arts, so that is not the same.

The most noticeable difference is that the fist is used with the thumb up, where most styles punch with the thumb pointed left or right depending on the hand. The placing of the thumb on the top of the fist is also unique to Isshinryu.
Tatsuo Shimabuku is the maker of Isshin Ryu. He merged his learnings from Shorin-ryū karate, Gojū-ryū karate, and Kobudo to form the style as it is taught today. And it is correctly pronounced Isshin (Ree Yoo) not Rye You, or Rye oo

It was a style of karate brought to Japan from Okinawa by Gichin Funakoshi. He modified Shorin Ryu karate to fit the what was needed in Japan. It was named after his pen name Shoto and the name for a place, Kan.
As far as I know (from listening in karate class) martial arts started in China and were brought to Japan along with calligraphy and art. However, the stereotypical, "karate" (there are many many different forms) was "invented" in Japan.
