Immigrants from Japan and Okinawa first brought the art to Hawaii and California in the 1920's. The first recorded observation by non-Japanese was in 1932 in Hawaii. The American soldiers after World War II were introduced to Karate while stationed in Japan and Okinawa and brought back the arts to the US. It wasn't until the popularity of such shows as the Green Hornet that Martial Arts and karate really started to grow in the US.
