The 1990s were a largely unsuccessful era by traditonally successful Liverpool Football Club's standards, especially after their domination of the top flight of English football and European competition in the 1970s and 1980s. The largely unsuccessful era was believed to be based on a failure on the club's part to combine a large array of new talent from the club's youth system (Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler being the first and anchor pairing and later the likes of Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard), and fuse them with, top quality foreign and continental players that needed to come into the Premiership to cope with the sudden opening up of the competition continentally and for global exposure.
