Alexander Cartwright II (April 17, 1820-July 12, 1892) was officially credited by the United States Congress on June 3, 1953, with inventing the modern game of Baseball. Many attribute the invention to Abner Doubleday, a story considered a myth by sports historians.
abner doubleday
Abner Doubleday founded baseball after watching people in a corn field with a stick hit a wooden ball. After he asked what they were doing, the men said the object of the game is to hit the ball with the stick. If it is hit in the air, it is to be caught before it hits the ground. If it hits the ground, then the person with the ball is to try to tag the hitter with the ball before he scores a run. Back then, there were no "outs", "strikes", "balls" or "foul balls".
