The Jules Rimet Cup was the original trophy awarded to the winner of the World Cup. Jules Rimet was a former president of FIFA and was instrumental in organizing the World Cup competition in 1928. It was first presented in 1930 to Uruguay, who won that year's World Cup competition. Rimet stated that whoever won the World Cup three times would keep the trophy. In 1970, Brazil won the World Cup and was awarded the Rimet Cup to keep forever. Unfortunately, the Jules Rimet Cup was stolen in 1983 and never recovered.

Frenchman Jules Rimet (1873-1956) was the president of the French Football Federation from 1919-1946, and the president of FIFA from 1921-1954. Rimet was the longest-serving president of FIFA, and in fact served as president at the time of the foundation of the World Cup in 1930. In Rimet's honor, his name was given to the trophy won by the World Cup winning team.
